Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated several key facilities at Williamnagar Government College in East Garo Hills today. The newly opened Academic Block, Girls’ Hostel, Boys’ Hostel, Mini Outdoor Stadium, and Entrepreneurship Cell mark a significant step towards enhancing education and infrastructure in Meghalaya. Alongside him were Minister PHE and MLA Williamnagar, Marcuise N Marak, MLA Rongjeng, Jim M Sangma, MLA Amlarem, Lakhmen Rymbui, Chief Secretary D P Wahlang, and senior officials from the Education department and district administration.
In his address, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed gratitude to all involved in establishing the college’s new facilities. He highlighted that while Williamnagar College was provincialized in 2008, no substantial investments were made to enhance its infrastructure since then. Sangma emphasized the importance of improving infrastructure to elevate the quality of education. He noted that over 500 crores have been allocated since 2018 to upgrade educational facilities across the state, expressing satisfaction in inaugurating the Academic Block and hostels.
Sangma underscored the government’s commitment to youth empowerment, citing various programs aimed at providing opportunities for education, employment, and livelihood. He mentioned initiatives like Prime Entrepreneurship, YESS Meghalaya, CM Elevate, and Meghalaya Games, designed to offer platforms and livelihood options for the youth. Sangma also pledged support for sports development, announcing plans to sanction funds for the construction of a Track and Field in the Williamnagar Mini Stadium.
Additionally, Sangma outlined development projects for Williamnagar and East Garo Hills, including the Town Beautification Project and healthcare infrastructure enhancements. He encouraged the Principal and teachers of Williamnagar Government College to work passionately towards making it a hub of knowledge and research. Sangma assured that the Cabinet would soon approve proposals to introduce Science and Arts streams in government colleges across Williamnagar, Baghmara, and Sohra.
Minister of Education, Rakkam A Sangma, urged educators to uphold the same standards of education found in renowned city colleges within Williamnagar Government College. He urged students to study diligently to bring honor to the institution.
